I’ve been invited to participate in this Kokeshi Group Show in San Diego, I had to customize a Kokeshi doll and now it’s ready to be sent! Just in time too, cause we have just been allowed to post full pics of our kokeshis! So here’s a bit more info on the show, and then you can see a nifty Flash turnaround of my entry.

In celebration of Bunka-no-hi – a Japanese national holiday promoting culture, the arts, and academic endeavour – Subtext and guest curator, Christina Conway, have carefully selected over 75 artists from 13 different countries to customize traditional Japanese Kokeshi dolls. The Kokeshi doll is a traditional folk art form of Japan, dating back to approximately 1830. Originally made by craftsmen during the winter months for sale to tourists, they have come to symbolize Japan to people around the world. Featured artists include Audrey Kawasaki, Marcos Chin, Julie West, Brandi Milne, Calef Brown, Camilla Engman, Catalina Estrada, Fiona Hewitt, Gina Triplett, Jeremiah Ketner, and many more.

Me invitaron a participar en una muestra colectiva en San Diego para la cual tuve que customizar un Kokeshi (es una muñeca tradicional japonesa de madera). Acabo de finalizar el mío y justo se nos ha permitido mostrar imágenes completas de los trabajos, así que acá les dejo un bonito Flash en el que se puede ver desde todos lados.

Just a couple of quick doodles in watercolors (trying to get the hang of them) without ref, without underlying pencil sketch, just trying to understand the medium a bit more. The orange paper was a pain, I’ll never use it for watercolors again: the color kept changing and the surface was awful.

Un par de bocetos rápidos en acuarela (estoy tratando de agarrarle más la mano) sin referencia ni dibujo a lápiz debajo, más que nada para entender un poco más cómo funciona el medio. El papel naranja no ayudó para nada, el color se mutaba todo el tiempo y la superficie es un garrón, ¡no lo uso nunca más para acuarela!

And I made this in gouache. I wasn’t so happy about the first one at first but now I kinda like it. I guess it’s not such a bad result for a quick experiment. I really like how the vampire turned out. Gouache is really easy to handle when doing things like that, I should have tried it before!

Estos los hice con témperas (las «profesionales» de Alba, jeje). El primero no me gustaba mucho cuando lo terminé pero ahora le tomé un poco de simpatía, supongo que no es un resultado tan malo para un experimento rápido. Me gusta cómo quedó el vampiro, la témpera me resultó muy fácil de manejar para hacer este tipo de cosas, me arrepiento de no haberla probado antes…

Here’s two pics I did for a sketch swap activity among friends. The first one is a character of my creation, Harold the journeyman. The second one is my take on Scott Altmann’s (aka Loomer) character, the turtle slayer.

We recently received this incredible painting from our dearest friend, awesome artist and all around cool guy, Rich Pellegrino. This crappy photo doesn’t do justice to the actual painting. You can find a better pic of this piece and lots of cool stuff on his site and blog, it’s really worth a visit.
